In an age where smartphones capture thousands of photos every year, managing and storing those memories has become increasingly challenging. While cloud services like Google Photos offer convenience, many users are now searching for a more private and flexible solution.

That’s where a self-hosted photo server comes in.

If you’re looking for a powerful, privacy-focused alternative, setting up an Immich server is one of the best choices available today. Combined with a reliable NAS system, you can build your own private photo cloud that rivals commercial platforms.

What Is an Immich Server?

An Immich server is a self-hosted photo and video backup platform designed to replicate the experience of Google Photos but with full control over your data.

It allows you to:

  • Automatically back up photos from your phone
  • Organize images with AI-powered features
  • View memories and timelines
  • Share albums with family or team members
  • Access your photos from anywhere

Unlike traditional cloud services, Immich runs entirely on your own hardware, making it a true private photo storage solution.

Why Build a Self-Hosted Photo Server?

More users are moving away from public cloud storage and toward self-hosted photo servers. Here’s why:

1. Privacy and Data Ownership

Your photos are personal. A private photo server ensures your data is not scanned, analyzed, or stored by third parties.

2. No Subscription Fees

Cloud storage costs can grow quickly. A one-time investment in a photo server NAS can replace ongoing subscription fees.

3. Unlimited Storage Potential

With a NAS, you can expand storage anytime by adding more drives.

4. Full Control and Customization

You decide how your photos are stored, organized, and accessed.

Immich vs Google Photos: Why Users Are Switching

Many users discover Immich while searching for a Google Photos alternative.

Here’s how they compare:

Data ownership✅ Full control❌ Cloud-controlled
Subscription❌ Free❌ Paid tiers
Privacy✅ High⚠️ Depends on policies
Storage limitDepends on hardwareLimited unless paid
AI features✅ Growing✅ Advanced

Why Use NAS for Your Photo Server?

While you can run Immich on a PC, using a NAS (Network Attached Storage) provides a far better experience.

A NAS is designed for:

  1. 24/7 operation
  2. centralized storage
  3. multi-device access
  4. data protection

Benefits of a NAS Photo Server
Centralized Storage

All your photos are stored in one place, accessible from all devices.

Automatic Backup

Your phone can upload photos directly to your NAS.

Remote Access

Access your photos anywhere, anytime.

Expandable Storage

Add more drives as your collection grows.

Recommended Hardware: LincStation NAS for Immich Server

If you want a compact and efficient solution, a LincStation NAS is a great platform to run your Immich server.

It is designed for:

  1. home users
  2. photographers
  3. small teams
  4. content creators

Why LincStation Works Well for a Photo Server
Strong Performance

Modern processors ensure smooth indexing and browsing of large photo libraries.

SSD + HDD Flexibility

Use SSD for caching and fast access, while HDDs store large photo collections.

Compact and Quiet

Perfect for home environments where noise and space matter.

Always-On Reliability

Run your photo server NAS 24/7 without interruptions.

With the right setup, a LincStation NAS becomes a powerful private photo cloud server.

Immich Server Requirements

Before installing Immich, make sure your system meets these requirements:

Minimum

  • 2 CPU cores
  • 4GB RAM
  • Docker support

Recommended

  • 4+ cores
  • 8GB–16GB RAM
  • SSD storage for database
  • NAS or server environment

How to Install Immich Server (Step-by-Step)

In this guide, we’ll show you how to set up an Immich server on a LincStation NAS running Unraid.

There are a few ways to install Immich on Unraid, such as:

Using Docker Compose Manager

Using community templates from the Apps tab

In this tutorial, we’ll use the simplest method that installing directly from the Apps (Community Applications) tab.

Step 1: Install Redis

First, we need to install Redis, which Immich uses for caching and background tasks.

Here’s how:

Go to the Apps tab in Unraid

Search for Redis

Select the official Redis container

Keep all settings at default

Click Apply

Once done, Redis will be running in the background.

Step 2: Install PostgreSQL 14

Next, we need a database. Immich uses PostgreSQL to store:

user accounts

photo metadata

system settings

Version 14 is recommended for best compatibility.

Installation steps:

Go to the Apps tab

Search for PostgreSQL 14

Choose an official or trusted container

Configuration:

Repository:pgvector/pgvector:pg14

POSTGRES_USER:immich

POSTGRES_PASSWORD:123456

POSTGRES_DB:immich

Leave all other settings as default, then click Apply.

Step 3: Install Immich Server

Now we’re ready to install the Immich server.

Installation:

Go to the Apps tab

Search for Immich (Official)

Select the default template

Step 4: Configure Immich

Now let’s connect everything together.

Storage Path

Set the /photos path to your storage folder
Example: /mnt/user/photos

Database Settings

DB_HOSTNAME: Enter the IP address of your PostgreSQL container

DB_USERNAME: immich

DB_PASSWORD:123456

DB_DATABASE_NAME: immich

👉Make sure these match your PostgreSQL settings.

Redis Settings

REDIS_HOSTNAME: Enter the IP address of your Redis container

Leave everything else as default.

Step 5: Start Immich Server

Click Apply, and Unraid will:

Deploy the container

Connect Immich to PostgreSQL

Connect Immich to Redis

After a short moment, your Immich server will be up and running.

Step 6: Access Your Immich Server

Open your browser and go to:

http://YOUR-NAS-IP:2283

You’ll now see the Immich setup page.

Create your account, and you’re ready to start building your private photo server.

Optimizing Your Photo Server Performance

To get the best performance from your Immich server, it’s important to optimize both storage and system setup.

First, use an SSD for your database and app data. This greatly improves loading speed, photo browsing, and overall responsiveness. A common setup is using SSD for system files and HDD for photo storage, balancing speed and capacity.

Next, enable hardware acceleration if your NAS supports it. This helps speed up tasks like thumbnail generation and image processing, while reducing CPU load.

Proper file organization also matters. Keeping photos in structured folders (such as by year or category) makes your system easier to manage and can improve performance over time.

Finally, make sure you’re using a stable network. A Gigabit Ethernet connection is recommended to ensure fast uploads, smooth access, and reliable remote viewing.

Final Thoughts: Build Your Own Photo Server Today

Setting up an Immich server is a powerful way to take full control of your photo storage.

With a self-hosted photo server, you benefit from:

  • complete privacy
  • no monthly fees
  • flexible and expandable storage

Instead of relying on cloud platforms, your data stays securely on your own hardware.

By combining Immich with a reliable NAS like LincStation, you can build a scalable and efficient photo server NAS for home or small business use.

As more users look for alternatives to cloud storage, building your own private photo cloud is quickly becoming a smarter and more future-proof solution.
